  Verdex Pro Feature Overview sheet

The feature overview sheet for Verdex Pro may be found here.

 Introduction

Introduced by Gumstix in Q3, 2008, the PXA270-based verdex pro product line addresses a number of issues including the recent discontinuance by Molex of their 120-pin connector that Gumstix uses in the verdex product line.

verdex pro uses the same 60-pin expansion boards as the verdex line, but introduces an 80-pn expansion board called netpro-vx for the other side.

A key addition to verdex pro over verdex has been on-board storage via a microSD card slot.

Recommendation from Gumstix, Inc.

Gumstix recommends that OEM customers change plans for verdex-based products to incorporate the verdex pro product line instead of the verdex product line. A move to verdex pro is intended to allow Gumstix to meet future volume requirements.

September 8th, 2008 Update

"verdex pro" = the name for products that used to be called verdex2, as below.

All information below changed to use the product name "verdex pro".

August 4, 2008 Update

Expansion Boards

The netpro-vx expansion board is available @ gumstix.com for use with the verdex pro motherboard. This expansion board for verdex pro will use the newer, lower cost 9117 Ethernet module for 10/100 Ethernet.

For wifi with verdex pro, either the  wifi module EU  or the wifi module FCC can be snapped on to the netpro-vx expansion board:

The 60-pin side of the verdex pro motherboard will be equivalent to the 60-pin side of the verdex motherboard. As such, verdex pro will be compatible with all existing 60-pin expansion boards such as consoleLCD16-vx.

Introduction and key items

Tthe PXA270-based verdex pro motherboard addresses a number of issues including the recent discontinuance by Molex of their 120-pin connector that we use on our verdex motherboards.

The verdex pro motherboard will be similar to the verdex motherboard except:

1: the 120-pin Molex connector of the verdex motherboard will be switched to a less expensive, more available 80-pin Hirose connector on the verdex pro motherboard.

2: there will be a microSD card slot on-board the verdex pro motherboard, which is not present on any verdex motherboard.

3. The inter-board distance on the 80-pin connector side of the verdex pro motherboard will be 3 mm as compared to the 2.5 mm inter-board distance on the 120-pin side of each verdex motherboard.

The verdex pro motherboard incorporates an 80-pin connector instead of the 120-pin connector and the same 60-pin connector and 24-pin connector as found on the verdex motherboard, with those two connectors having the same alignment on the verdex pro motherboard as the verdex motherboard.

The 60-pin side of the verdex pro motherboard will be equivalent to the 60-pin side of the verdex motherboard and will be compatible with existing 60-pin boards such as consoleLCD16-vx.

- The signals carried on the 80-pin connector will be a reduced set of signals as compared to those signals found on the 120-pin connector.

- 10 data bits of CIF signals plus control signals are available on the 80-pin connector.

Expansion Boards

- netpro-vx expansion board available for use with the verdex pro motherboard. This expansion boards uses the newer, lower cost 9117 Ethernet module for 10/100 Ethernet.

Note: the August 4th notice posted above changes the plans for expansion boards as stated here.

(Note that a microSD card slot is located on the verdex pro motherboard)

- the wifi module EU and wifi module FCC that attach to the netmicroSD-vx boards to make netwifimicroSD expansion boards also snap into the netpro-vx expansion board to make an 802.11b/g capable board for the verdex pro motherboard.

verdex Availability

Gumstix plans to continue selling verdex motherboards and related 120-pin expansion boards as supplies last. However, the availability of verdex products is limited to our stock of a few thousand 120-pin connectors, only, as Gumstix is not able to purchase any more 120-pin Molex connectors.

PLEASE NOTE for OEMs:

Gumstix recommends that OEM customers change plans for verdex-based products to incorporate the verdex pro product line instead of the verdex product line. A move to verdex pro is intended to allow Gumstix to meet future volume requirements.
