Gumstix Overo COMs - Feature Overview

Gumstix open source computing
   Gumstix Overo™ COM: a tiny, OMAP-based computer-on-module (COM)

The Gumstix Overo series delivers Texas Instruments' OMAP applications processing power in a Linux-based computer-on-module series.

Companies and developers located in more than 50 countries use Gumstix Overo COMs as an embedded computer in a wide range of products.
  Highlights

  • Gumstix Overo offers "laptop-like performance in a stick-of-gum sized computer-on-module"
  • The Gumstix Overo series extends the function of Texas Instruments OMAP35x Applications Processors to a platform of leading I/O expandability.
  • The Overo motherboard, called a computer-on-module board or COM, is smaller than a stick of gum.
  • A wide range of expansion boards is available to create and produce new products sooner and at a lower cost.
  • Overo COMs can be clustered in groups of seven or by the hundreds via the Stagecoach expansion board.
  • Gumstix publishes the schematics of these expansion boards; these can be freely used as a reference designs for custom expansion boards.
  • OpenEmbedded package management enhances rapid product creation.
  • Open-source Linux is pre-loaded on each Overo COM
  • Product information and development information is available online 24/7.
  • Technical support comes from the large, diverse Gumstix community of more than 10,000 engineers in over 50 countries.
  Applications
  • Transportation & Location Tracking
  • Telecommunications
  • Industrial Automation & Control
  • Workforce Data Collection and Management
  • Retail Automation, Data Communications
  • Security and Power Management
  • Embedded Computer
  • Robotics, Research & Development
  • Clustered OMAP computing
  Benefits
  • The Gumstix Overo series has been designed for prototyping, proof of concept and incorporation into a final product.
  • Each Gumstix Overo computer is an embedded Linux computer that can be programmed to perform in almost any industry.
  • Overo, as an embedded module, is ideal for customer products that have up to 50,000 EAU (annual sales).
  • The cluster computing power of the Stagecoach board can reduce native compile times and speed application development.
  • The modular design of the OMAP-based Overo series can lower development time and reduce the final product cost.

  Expansion Board Notes:

  •   Each expansion board of the Overo series can be connected to any Overo computer-on-module.
  •   The Thumbo board only provides enough power for the Overo Earth COM and the Overo Water COM.

  • To know what function is shipping on a Gumstix product at any given time, review the "Features" information presented on the board's product page at www.gumstix.com rather than depending upon the function designed into the schematic posted in pubs.gumstix.com. Gumstix makes this recommendation because function designed on to a Gumstix board (as per schematic) may not be populated during the build process.

The 3D CAD layout of each expansion board has been published in pubs.gumstix.com in DXF, IGES, STEP and PDF formats.
